At the Special Session on Hydrogen-Oxygen Medicine Development of the 18th Straits Forum Health Sub-forum, Academician Zhong Nanshan stated in his speech that the release of the group standard General Specifications for Clinical Application of Hydrogen-Oxygen Mixture Inhalation Therapy marks a milestone in China’s transition of hydrogen-oxygen medicine from experience-based practice to standardized clinical application。

He particularly stressed that unified clinical operating protocols and a complete industrial standard system serve as the cornerstone for the long-term sound development of hydrogen-oxygen medicine.
Academician Zhong Nanshan pointed out that to achieve sustainable and healthy growth, hydrogen-oxygen medicine must be grounded in evidence-based medicine, and promote clinical applications supported by rigorous and sufficient clinical evidence. The industry should adhere to the principle of regulation first and standards-driven development. With the rapid expansion of hydrogen-oxygen medicine and wider clinical adoption, inconsistent practices have emerged across different regions and medical institutions in terms of operating procedures, indication judgment and efficacy evaluation. Such fragmentation hinders academic exchanges and comparative efficacy assessments, making the unification of clinical protocols and improvement of the standard system an urgent priority.
Academician Zhong’s viewpoint fully demonstrates the critical value of standardization for the whole sector. He further proposed that unified clinical operations, a complete standard framework and eliminating inappropriate and non-compliant practices should be implemented to address disciplinary weaknesses, driving this indigenous interdisciplinary innovation to fully transition from empirical trials to standardized, scientific and regulated development.
Academician Zhong Nanshan noted that remedying disciplinary shortcomings is a systematic project involving standard formulation, nationwide promotion and continuous optimization. The rollout of group standards requires coordinated efforts from competent authorities, industrial associations, medical institutions and manufacturers. 
He stated that after years of independent research and iterative innovation, China has built comprehensive scientific research, clinical application and industrial support systems for hydrogen-oxygen medicine, with domestically manufactured compliant medical devices continuously upgraded to be lighter and smarter. Academician Zhong emphasized that China now possesses the capability to transition from a technology follower to a global leader in hydrogen-oxygen medicine. Standardization is required to transform technological advantages into institutional advantages, standard-setting capabilities and global brand value. He called on all stakeholders to join hands and advance the high-quality development of hydrogen-oxygen medicine.
In his summary, Academician Zhong Nanshan outlined three major values brought by standardization: First, it ensures safe, effective and accessible medical technologies that benefit patients, allowing patients to have clear efficacy expectations and guaranteed safety during hydrogen-oxygen treatment. Second, it provides a framework for disciplinary advancement and refinement, establishing unified terminology and evaluation criteria for clinical research and academic communication. Third, it underlies orderly industrial development, creating clear rules for compliant enterprises and eliminating substandard products from the market.

Academician Zhong Nanshan said that decades of independent research and iterative innovation have enabled China to establish complete research, clinical and industrial systems for hydrogen-oxygen medicine. He took the release of the new group standard as a new starting point to further consolidate China’s leading global position and enable more patients to benefit from safe and standardized hydrogen-oxygen therapy.
The newly issued group standard General Specifications for Clinical Application of Hydrogen-Oxygen Mixture Inhalation Therapy (T/CRHA 316—2026) represents the practical implementation of Academician Zhong’s vision. Co-led and drafted by the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (National Respiratory Medical Center), Peking Union Medical College Hospital and Shanghai Asclepius Meditec Co., Ltd., the standard was co-compiled by more than 20 leading tertiary hospitals across China including Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University.
It clearly defines clinically applicable scenarios, operating specifications and application boundaries of hydrogen-oxygen inhalation therapy, laying an institutional foundation for standardized diagnosis, treatment and academic collaboration.
In accordance with the Administrative Measures for Group Standards of the Chinese Research Hospital Association, the association hereby approves and releases eight group standards including General Specifications for Clinical Application of Hydrogen-Oxygen Mixture Inhalation Therapy (T/CRHA 316—2026).
